Ingredient: Dragon Fruit
Origin: Mexico
Dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya, is a beautiful fruit on the inside and out. The outside of the fruit has a thin skin covered in “scales”, and the inside is soft in texture with little black seeds. The dragon fruit plant also produces beautiful flowers, from which the fruit grows. Many have compared the texture of a dragon fruit to a kiwi, mainly because of the juicy flesh and tiny seeds.
There are three variations of dragon fruit. The first has red skin and white flesh. The second has red skin and red flesh. These two look almost exactly alike on the outside, but the inside varies from bright white to purple-red. The third has yellow skin and white flesh. All three have differences in appearance, but they all are similar in texture and flavor.
To eat a dragon fruit, start by cutting the fruit in half lengthwise. The flesh will easily come out if you run your finger between the flesh and skin (similar to an avocado). You can then eat the flesh and seeds, as both have amazing health benefits. Try eating dragon fruit in a salsa or smoothie. Dragon fruit is also delicious in pastries or even on its own! This fruit is packed with vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber, so anyway to enjoy dragon fruit is great for you and your health.
